Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust cuts energy costs with Certero

Power Saving

Trust saves £37,000 and 167 tons of CO2 annually by powering down PCs

The NHS stated recently that it aims to become a leading sustainable and low carbon organisation, in order to meet the Government’s target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Many NHS Trusts are responding to this objective and taking measures to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Birmingham Children’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, for example, has taken a step often overlooked by too many organisations when trying to reduce energy costs – that of powering down unused PCs, and doing it in a way that doesn’t impact or frustrate the PC user. To achieve this, it is using PowerStudio from Certero. The solution has helped the Trust save £37,000 and 167 tons of CO2 annually, and it paid for itself in an impressive three months.

Of course, power management solutions aren’t new. But they have evolved and some now benefit from being based on easy to use Web 2.0 technologies and sit comfortably on Microsoft networks, so deployment can be a breeze. It’s not just the NHS that is waking up to sending idle PCs to rest, but other private sectors companies, too.

As a result, Certero, a British software developer, has seen global interest in its solutions, establishing a presence in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, and much closer to home, opened an office in Scotland this week.  So, could power management solutions be the miracle cure?  When seen in the context of other energy saving measures, they certainly play a role in making the environment better. But perhaps more than anything, the interest in power management solutions shows that many companies are now realising the savings that can be quickly achieved, simply by powering down idle PCs.
