OmniPage: 18 and still making conversions
Document conversion and scanning
It’s resulted in a product with the highest levels of quality and accuracy ever
If a week is a long time in office politics, then 18 years is a length of time so long it’s beyond all comprehension.
OmniPage is older than Anne Robinson. But at version 18, it’s still leading the field and taking on new challenges. It’s even starting scanning to the cloud - I’ll explain what that means a bit later. OmniPage still maintains an amazingly high rate of accuracy in document conversion within Microsoft Windows and is learning new tricks too, such as PDF eDiscovery conversion.
The Nuance Cloud Connector helps you manage your documents when they’re in the cloud. It allows users to directly open, save and convert documents in Google Docs, Box.net, Windows SkyDrive and 20 other cloud services. You can scan converted documents to those same cloud environments and avoid all the ghastly login and upload steps.
OmniPage 18 was designed with a strong focus on user input, said Robert Weideman, general manager for Nuance’s document imaging division (known in the industry as the DID-e-men). “It’s resulted in a product with the highest levels of quality and accuracy ever,” he said.
Over 70 per cent of OmniPage customers already use document cloud services. “This release brings optical character recognition and scanning to the mobile and cloud-connected users,” he continued.
It’s quicker too. OmniPage 18 saves users at least 15 minutes per page, compared to manually re-creating a document, so you’ll save an hour on a simple four page document. PDF conversion speeds are up 30 per cent faster and new scanner enhancement tools (SET) use automatic image correction to improve the quality of poorly scanned images. You can even use your mobile to photograph a whiteboard and reproduce readable image content, Nuance promises.
The PDF conversion function means that PDFs can be searched now, whether they’re on your C drive on in the cloud and the eDiscovery Assistant has a batch conversion routine, which is great for people lawyers and HRs working with contracts, document revisions, financial and tax information.
