Extreme Networks launches BlackDiamonds that burn less fossil fuels

The switch that sleeps

Foundry? That’s an apt name for a product that burns so much electricity

Extreme Networks has claimed it can dramatically undercut the running costs of the kit from its rivals Cisco and Foundry. The new BlackDiamond blade chassis uses only a third of the energy that its power hungry Cisco equivalent needs. And it only burns a third of the fossil fuels that are consumed by the Foundry product.

His voice trembling with excitement Gary Newbold, the regional director that Extreme recently poached off 3Com, said Extreme Networks had raised the bar for eco-friendly data centres.
Newbold was speaking at the launch of the BlackDiamond 8900-series modules for the BlackDiamond 8800 series switch. This purpose-built enterprise architecture for next generation data centers enables market-leading scalability of 10 Gigabit Ethernet, up to 582 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports in a single rack, while delivering energy efficiency and compelling value.
The key to the product’s economy is that it can go into an idle state when not in use at the data centre. But it can immediately snap out of hibernation as soon as it’s needed.
Demand for this kit is driven by resource intensive applications like high definition video, Web 2.0 social platforms and UC collaboration. Virtualisation, server consolidation and IT outsourcing are driving demands for highly scalable 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks in data centres and managed hosting facilities.
Cloud computing environments, which need scalable networks, are also driving sales. The BlackDiamond 8900-series modules can perform in this situation without costing us the earth, argued Newbold.

Technical details
Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 8900-series modules upgrade the BlackDiamond 8800 platform with a 3.8 terabit switching fabric. Featuring the foundation of an advanced modular network operating system, ExtremeXOS, the BlackDiamond 8800 series switches provide quick integration and automation of network environments via Universal Port. Also enabled are XML, CLI and SNMP interfaces through EPICenter, a full-featured network management tool. This provides customers with a flexible Ethernet networking and management portfolio of tightly integrated tools for managing their next generation data centers.

“The BlackDiamond modules addresses the three most critical areas that data centre managers worry about: performance, cost of ownership and flexibility in design,” said Newbold.
