The lights are going off all over England's data centres
At least they should be
"Don't you know there's a war on?" he shouted. "It's a war on watts"
Data Centre managers could be operating in the dark soon, to cut the power bills and save the planet.
Around three per cent of all power consumed is used to run green lights that nbody actually looks at. Extrapolate that to account for Britain’s 500 rack data centres, and this shows that UK datacentres waste £1.8 million a year on buring electricity.
Flashing lights aren’t that useful says Paul Eo, infrastructure management specialist LS. “The main priority of a data centre manager is to deliver maximum availability with minimum operating costs.”
They’re achieving the first objective, but not the second, he says. He proposes a new approach. We should all become like Dad’s Army’s ARP warden Mr Hodges, and go round telling data centre manager’s to “Put that light out.”
